My favorite time of the year is when all my kids and grandkids are together for a week of “cousins and family camp” in the foothills of the Shenandoah Mountains of Virginia.

This year, my annual hike with my friend Melody took us north to the Chain Lakes region of the Cascade Range near Bellingham, Washington. On our first day, I filtered our water for our oatmeal, and then we set out on a ten-and-a-half-mile hike. Recently we, like many of you, have experienced good times and really hard times. That’s just life. In these times, it’s easy to focus on what’s hard, but the gift of a trip to the ocean helps restore my perspective and remind me how big, how powerful, and how mighty God is. We all need to get out in nature and marvel and ponder his glorious creation.
