One Word

Some time ago I realized how easy it was for me to awaken in the morning and begin to feel overwhelmed by my day. I knew that I needed to focus on God first and not my “list” or my feelings.

But too often we dive into the day’s responsibilities unaware of the continual presence and intimate involvement of God in our lives. It’s easy to let our concerns of the moment become bigger in our heads than our God. What we need is a bigger vision of our great God and a simple way to nurture this vision.

The more we understand who He is, the easier it will be for us to trust Him.

John 14:26 says, “The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

To stop my own habit of thinking negatively in the morning, I began the practice of asking the Holy Spirit to remind me of one character trait of God that I could focus on that day.

This daily habit has made a big difference in my understanding of how very big our God is and how very much He longs for me to be aware of His loving presence throughout each day.

The Book

One Devotional: One Verse, One Trait, and One Thought for 100 days is designed to encourage you to begin a daily habit of focusing on one character trait of our amazing God.

It is so easy for our lives to become about me and my stuff. When this happens we lose perspective and our joy begins to evaporate. God delights in revealing himself to us.

If we will begin to walk through each day focusing on Him and His character we will gain a healthier perspective on our stuff.

The Cards

My daughter-in-law, a friend, and I developed the One Word cards and stationery as a fresh way of focusing on God’s Word. The content comes from my book One Devotional, the calligraphy is done by Jessica Blanchard, and the original paintings are by my daughter-in-law Christen Yates.

We found that having a visual reminder of God has helped us to focus more on who He is each day rather than on who we are or are not or on our issues.

One Verse:

And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19

There is so much brokenness in our world. I am broken. So is _____. One thing all humans have in common is our brokenness. Jesus, you are intimately familiar with brokenness. Your body was broken for me, for _____. You understand the pain of brokenness but it is in your brokenness that we can begin to experience wholeness.
Recently I’ve been thinking about a new personal Recently I’ve been thinking about a new personal discipline I want to adopt in this new year. I want to do one thing every day for someone else. It’s a practical application for loving our neighbors as ourselves. It also enables us to get our focus off our selves and onto someone else and this brings us joy. It might be a text or email or postcard or call or cookies left on someone’s front door. This joy of giving fills our cup. It’s also a great thing to involve your whole family in. It helps our kids learn to be other-centered rather than self-centered. Two special friends just sent me these flowers and they have brought me great great joy. Thank you for choosing to bless me. I have learned from your generosity.

You are a God of mystery. It’s a glorious mystery. I can’t explain you even though sometimes I want to. Your mystery is part of what makes you so much greater than man. Thank you that you, with all of your glorious mystery, have chosen to dwell in me.

It brought both of us so much joy and reminded me of how special it is to give things away. I  highly recommend it.
