As a parent, one thing you know for sure is that each of your children has their own unique gifts — and these gifts often have a flip side, a corresponding weakness they’ll need to work on.
My friend Laurie recently asked me about how to help her children with their strengths and weaknesses. She has one child who has great leadership potential, but he can be a bit bossy. (I’m quite familiar with this character trait as it’s one I share, and I know I drove my mom crazy!)
Her other child is quite sensitive and can be very compassionate, but also overreacts to things.
So how can you help your children recognize their gifts but also understand and begin to work on the challenges that come with that gift? I’m answering that question today!
And I’ve got a simple formula for how to talk to your children, whatever strengths and weaknesses they may have.
First, tell them about the strengths and unique talents you see in them. Share with them the particular weaknesses or tendencies they’ll need to pay attention to. Give them an example of someone with the same gift and show them how God used them to do great things.
Lastly, share your own gifts and weaknesses with them (they probably have an idea of these already!) and how you’ve had to work on them over the years.
